Hi all,

Does anyone have (preferably) first-hand knowledge or experience with
an EFIS eGYRO-2 Electronic Horizon? It looks like an ideal
replacement for my aging T&S.

Geoff,

I have a line of electronic Gyros MGL Avionics

I have flown with the Horizon and compass and it does work well, but
like all others with this technology are not TSO.

In my opinion they are much better that the Tru-Track that only gives
a light when pitch or bank is over +/_ 30 deg.

I would like to second that question. I'm talking serious cloud flying.
Can it safely be done with the eGYRO-2, or is it just sort of an
emergency backup?

I guess you aren't referring to the Tru-Trak

It has no lights, gives excellent bank info (no pitch info) and can be left
off until needed as it "erects" within 3 seconds even if you're cranked over
in a steep turn. It's available in a 1 minute turn rate version (best for
gliders) and costs about $450 USD. I'm happy with mine.

Bumper,

I am not speaking of the Tru-Trak turn and bank and would not expect
the turn and bank to be used as a horizon.

I am speaking of the Tru-Trak ADI that gives light indications when
pitch and bank are over 30 deg.

I consider the MGL to be more informative at all pitch and bank
angles.

Richard,

Is the MGL such that you could leave it off for an entire flight, but
turn it on if you suddenly became concerned that you might need it? If
so, how much time does it take to "come up".

Technical specifications:
Display temperature range (operational): -20 to +80 degrees C
Supply voltage: +8 to +18V. +24/28V with optional pre regulator.
Supply current AV-1: 40mA/120mA (backlight off/on)
Supply current SP-3x: 100mA
Technical data SP-3hc sensor package. Other versions of these, delete
items not applicable.
IMU (Inertial measurement unit)
Technology: Three axis gyro plus two axis accelerometer. Third axis
accelerometer for special
applications available as option.
Gyro type: Coriolis force sensing using vibrating structure.
Manufactured using MEMS
technology.
Accelerometer: MEMS technology.
Gyro Bias drift: 1 degree/Minute typical (Note: without accelerometer
error compensation, gyros
only).
Recommended temperature range for operation: 10-30 degrees C. Other
temperature ranges are
possible providing sensor package is allowed to acclimatize and adjust
after power up.
Alternatively, sensor package can be user calibrated for a different
temperature rage (See offset
calibration).
Accelerometer drift: 1 degree per 10 degree C temperature change.
Horizontal position may be
set to zero by user.
Startup time: Instantaneous if in recommended temperature range. Up to
30 seconds typical if
outside of this range. Manual "fast set" available.
Maximum rate of turn: 165 degrees/second. Each axis simultaneously. Up
to 180 degrees/second
typical when operated in recommended temperature range (not
guaranteed, typical specification).
Resonance frequency of gyros: 14Khz.

Total power usage 140 mA. I just turned one on and it indicated in
about 6 seconds. It was within the temp range specified. The sensors
does have an internal heater.
I would turn the instrument on much earlier as the power usage is low.
